Prayer requests for the 209th
General Assembly
My Friends in Christ: Last January, when I was selected by our presbytery to be one
of our two commissioners to this year's General Assembly, I began a spiritual journey
which is about to reach its peak. Through out my preparation for this meeting I
have felt the real presence of prayers offered on my behalf and for the Assembly. I thank
you for those and as the convening of the Assembly draws near I offer the following
general and personal prayer suggestions for those interested in upholding this event
before God over the next two weeks.
Sunday June 8:
Pray for the preparations for this meeting and the Local Arrangements committee.
Pray for the commissioners, their preparation for the meeting, and that the Holy
Spirit will be working in us giving us discernment of God's will for the church.
Monday June 9:
Pray for the study of the recommendations in the "Anderson Report" and for God's
guidance in implementing the recommendations and the restructuring of the denomination's
central office and staff structure.
Tuesday June 10:
Pray for the communication of our reformed doctrine as the church focuses on the
"Great Ends of the Church," a new catechism, and the "Essential Tenets of the Reformed
Faith."
Wednesday June 11:
Pray for our ecumenical relationships as we look at the future status of the Consultation
On Church Unity and the full communion among the reformed churches in North America.
Thursday June 12:
Pray for the peace and unity of the church. May we speak the truth in love and
take time to really listen to what others have to say.
Friday June 13:
Pray for the commissioners traveling to Syracuse for the Assembly and for me and
my family traveling back east for the meeting.
Saturday June 14:
General Assembly Convenes
. As the GA begins work pray that all we do may be for the glory of God and pray
for the election of the new moderator and the candidates for moderator: Patricia
G. Brown, D. Eugene Sibery, and Louis H. Zbinden, Jr.
Sunday June 15:
A day of celebration, worship and preparation
. As foreign missionaries will be commissioned at the morning worship service, pray
for their service and give thanks for God's call in their lives and their dedication
to serve Him. Also pray for the Assembly committees as they begin work this afternoon.
Monday June 16:
The assembly committees continue their work. Pray for my committee as we work today
on issues related to our denomination's theological institutions.
Tuesday June 17:
Continue to pray for the committees and my committee as we deal with issues related
to worship today.
Wednesday June 18:
Reading and Full Assembly reconvenes.
As we spend the morning trying to read all of the reports from the other 16 committees
pray for me, and all the other commissioners that we may discern God's will in the
business we will be acting on.
Thursday June 19:
Pray that the Assembly may have God's guidance to work through difficult issues
today to His Glory and in ways that proclaim Christian unity.
Friday June 20:
As the Assembly nears the end, this is traditionally a very long day necessary to
finish all of the business before us. Pray for our strength and focus as we continue
to work on the issues before us.
Saturday June 21:
General Assembly Adjourns
. As we finish work and begin our trip home, pray for the commissioners as they return
home and as they interpret the actions of the assembly to the members of the church.
